HIPAA Security Rule Compliance
The problem of data leakage is not unique to medical environments, though due to HIPAA regulation, the consequences of not checking the threat is greater here. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Public Law 104-191 (HIPAA), adopted in 1996, hold all American organizations which use the personal medical data of citizens responsible for assuring the confidentiality of that information. HIPAA requirements are mandatory for medical institutions, medical insurance companies, government agencies and other organizations which have access to private medical records. This white paper will review the requirements of the HIPAA Security Rule and its impact on a company's information security infrastructure.
